Comprehensive Mapping for Multi-Season Recreation and Accessibility
Green Goat Maps collaborated with the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) to create an updated multi-season map for Mount Van Hoevenberg Nordic and Sliding Centers. This project focused on designing a visually appealing and functional map to guide visitors, athletes, and recreational users through the complex’s extensive trails, attractions, and amenities.

To meet the needs of ORDA and its stakeholders, Green Goat Maps was contracted to:
Create a detailed base map incorporating trails, ski areas, infrastructure, and natural features, including newly developed trails and infrastructure improvements.
Design a map that caters to both winter and summer activities, ensuring usability for athletes, tourists, and local visitors.
Add educational and interpretive content, including points of interest, wayfinding markers, trail difficulty levels, and details about the venue’s history and mission.
Format the map for printed and digital formats, such as Avenza Maps, and coordinate with vendors to produce durable, weather-resistant materials.
Green Goat Maps delivered a detailed multi-season map showcasing comprehensive trail representation, including accurate depictions of trails, amenities, and infrastructure formatted for multiple seasons. The map incorporates enhanced wayfinding elements such as clear markers, difficulty levels, and “You Are Here” indicators, making navigation effortless for users. The design integrates ORDA’s branding while visually highlighting the key features of the complex, ensuring both functional use and aesthetic appeal. Additionally, durable weather-resistant printed maps and georeferenced digital files were produced to meet diverse usage needs.
Challenges of This Project
One of the primary challenges was designing a map that catered to diverse user groups, including international athletes, tourists, and recreational visitors. The integration of multi-season elements required careful planning to balance visual clarity with comprehensive detail. Additionally, ensuring geospatial accuracy while adhering to ORDA’s branding and educational goals involved multiple iterations and close collaboration.
