Ironman Athlete Map and Conduct Guide

Enhancing Safety and Community Engagement for Ironman Lake Placid

Green Goat Maps collaborated with IRONMAN to develop an Athlete Conduct Map and Guide for the 2022 IRONMAN Lake Placid event. The purpose of this guide was to educate athletes on safe road practices, highlight community concerns, and enhance positive interactions between participants and residents. Distributed by the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (ROOST) to hotels and storefronts in the surrounding communities, this resource provided essential information to improve athlete awareness and community engagement.

A map and guide of the High Peaks Region in Lake Placid, showcasing biking, running, and swimming routes. The main map highlights a scenic cycling route with climbs and key locations, including Wilmington, Keene, and Jay, with route details in red. Insets display running and swimming routes. A side panel outlines the Athlete Code of Conduct and Safety guidelines, emphasizing sportsmanship and road safety. The guide also features recommended climbs, scenic views, and emergency contact information, along with a QR code for additional resources. An illustration of cyclists on a mountain road is included.

To meet the needs of the community, Green Goat Maps was contracted to:

  • Design an Athlete Conduct Map and Guide incorporating the race course, local communities, and training routes.

  • Include detailed information on athlete behavior expectations, community concerns, and road safety guidelines.

  • Highlight emergency resources and laws to ensure a safe experience for athletes and respect for the local population.

  • Collaborate with ROOST to distribute the guide strategically and maximize outreach.

The project produced a comprehensive Athlete Conduct Map and Guide, featuring detailed sections on athlete rules, road safety tips, and descriptive information about local communities. It was delivered in visually appealing formats suitable for both digital and print distribution. Additionally, the guide integrated a clearly defined athlete code of conduct to ensure alignment with community expectations.

This guide highlights the Adirondack High Peaks region, known for its breathtaking scenery, outdoor adventures, and the IRONMAN Lake Placid event. It features iconic locations like Lake Placid, Wilmington, and Saranac Lake, with attractions such as Whiteface Mountain and Mirror Lake. Celebrating the region’s vibrant communities and rich history, the guide also honors the Kanien’kehá:ka/Mohawk Nation as the traditional stewards of the land.

Challenges of This Project

Balancing the educational needs of athletes with community concerns was a key challenge. The guide needed to clearly communicate safety guidelines and local regulations while remaining easy to navigate. Additionally, integrating emergency contacts and local attractions required careful organization to ensure clarity without overwhelming users.

Value for Our Client

The Athlete Conduct Map improved awareness and community engagement by providing essential safety information and fostering positive interactions. The print and digital format ensured accessibility, while strategic distribution through ROOST maximized its reach. By equipping athletes with clear guidelines, the guide contributed to safer practices and a more positive event experience.

This project delivered an impactful, informative guide that supports IRONMAN’s commitment to community relations and athlete education. By providing actionable guidelines and showcasing local attractions, the map and guide enhance the event’s positive impact on the region. Athletes gain essential resources, while the local community benefits from increased awareness and tourism.

The final guide successfully addressed key community concerns while providing athletes with essential safety and navigational resources. The inclusion of a well-defined code of conduct fostered mutual respect between participants and local residents. By strategically distributing the guide, the project contributed to improved athlete awareness, safer road practices, and greater economic benefits for the region.
