Engaging Residents in Land Conservation

Increasing Conservation Participation Through Strategic Outreach

This map highlights private parcels and focus areas within the Adirondack Park, showcasing land classifications such as wilderness, wild forest, and conservation easements. Key focus areas include Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, Wilmington, and Jay, with private parcels marked in orange and yellow, differentiated by size. It emphasizes the interaction between private land, conservation zones, and wilderness areas, illustrating the region’s diverse land use. The legend provides details on state land classifications, river watersheds, and protected areas, with prominent features like the High Peaks Wilderness and Lake Placid Focus Area.

Green Goat Maps partnered with the Lake Placid Land Conservancy (LPLC) to implement their strategic plan and expand conservation efforts in the Ausable River and Saranac River Watersheds. The goal of this initiative is to engage landowners in these regions, raising awareness and encouraging participation in land conservation.

Green Goat Maps was tasked with designing and executing a three-phase program to target LPLC’s conservation efforts and implement a citizen science outreach initiative. This program aims to enhance awareness and participation among regional landowners, aligning with LPLC’s conservation priorities.

Our Approach to the Project:

Phase I – Geographic Mapping and Analysis:

  • Utilized geographic information systems (GIS) to identify and map critical areas within LPLC’s focus regions.

  • Highlighted ecological and cultural resources in need of protection through conservation easements.

Phase II – Community Conservation Workshops:ience.

  • Gathered insights on community needs and interests through interactive discussions with landowners.

Phase III – Citizen Science Outreach Program Development:

  • Created a comprehensive written outreach program tailored for landowners.

  • Designed protocols to effectively assess, enroll, and engage participants in citizen science initiatives.

This map focuses on the Lake Placid area, illustrating private land parcels alongside state land classifications like wilderness, wild forest, and intensive use zones. Private parcels are highlighted in orange and yellow, representing sizes of 10–49 acres and 50 acres or more, respectively. The red dashed line outlines the Lake Placid focus area, bordered by notable landmarks such as the Sentinel Range Wilderness and McKenzie Mountain Wilderness. A clear legend helps identify land types, water bodies, and conservation easements within the region.

The project resulted in a comprehensive GIS analysis and maps identifying priority conservation areas. Community Conservation workshops were designed to educate and engage landowners. A written citizen science outreach program was developed to align with LPLC’s target audiences, ensuring meaningful participation and impact.

Challenges of This Project

Identifying and engaging landowners in LPLC’s priority areas while addressing diverse community needs was a key challenge. Green Goat Maps leveraged GIS tools to pinpoint critical conservation areas accurately and conducted inclusive workshops to gather community input. Additionally, creating a citizen science program tailored to landowners unfamiliar with conservation practices required developing user-friendly protocols to simplify participation.

Value for Our Client

This initiative empowered LPLC to target conservation efforts effectively, foster community involvement, and strengthen long-term land protection. GIS mapping enabled strategic prioritization, while community workshops increased awareness and engagement. The citizen science outreach program provided landowners with accessible tools to contribute actively, resulting in a growing network of conservation participants and enhanced regional land stewardship.

This initiative empowers LPLC to target conservation efforts in ecologically and culturally significant areas, foster community involvement through accessible education and outreach, and strengthen long-term land protection efforts by increasing the number of conservation easements in the region.

By connecting landowners with tools and knowledge, this program is a vital step toward sustaining the natural and cultural heritage of the Ausable River and Saranac River Watersheds.

The initiative successfully increased landowner participation in conservation efforts across the targeted watersheds. GIS mapping allowed LPLC to strategically prioritize conservation areas, while community workshops fostered greater awareness and engagement. The citizen science outreach program provided landowners with accessible tools to contribute to conservation initiatives actively, resulting in a growing network of environmentally conscious participants and strengthened land protection efforts.
