Enhancing Public Understanding at Boquet River Nature Preserve

Green Goat Maps partnered with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to develop two interpretive signs for Boquet River Nature Preserve (BRNP) in Willsboro. These signs were designed to educate visitors on the area's unique ecosystems and history while enhancing their trail experiences. The project included designing and producing custom graphics, maps, and text for two trailheads: the River Trailhead and the Upland Trailhead.
To meet TNC's needs, Green Goat Maps was contracted to:
Engage with TNC to identify educational goals for the signs, focusing on ecological themes such as floodplain forest ecology, salmon spawning, and forest succession.
Create a detailed basemap to ensure accurate and visually appealing cartographic elements for each trailhead.
Develop interpretive storylines, illustrations, and design layouts based on TNC’s vision and educational themes.
Incorporate TNC feedback through two rounds of revisions to refine the design and content.
Manage the production of weather-resistant kiosk panels, ensuring quality and durability.

The final project included two interpretive sign designs, tailored for the River Trailhead and Upland Trailhead, featuring themes such as floodplain ecology, wildlife, and the area's historical significance. A custom map was designed to orient visitors and provide clear wayfinding guidance. Illustrations and text emphasized ecological education and trail stewardship principles. High-quality, durable signage panels were tested for outdoor installation.
Challenges of This Project
Communicating complex ecological information in an engaging and accessible way was a key challenge. The team needed to balance scientific accuracy with visitor-friendly storytelling, using graphics and concise text to maintain clarity. Additionally, ensuring alignment with TNC’s branding and educational goals required close collaboration and iterative feedback.
